The main objective of the course is to empower and inspire you in traditional mortise and tenon carpentry. Its the course we wish we had when we started out in timber framing! We have designed a frame as a teaching aid and tweaked it over many courses, and this is what you will be building over the course of the week. We have always in the past managed to have a completed frame to put up on Friday, which makes a fitting end to the week.
We aim to teach the basics of timber frame design, layout and construction, based around the traditional English method of plumb bob scribing, a tradition that extends back to the medieval timber structures that survive to this day.
Our course is unique as we take a full woodland to workshop approach to carpentry, also looking at woodland management, timber conversion and sawmilling, grading, building design and history as well as making a visit to some brilliant local old timber buildings.
There is a lot to cover over the course of the week, so we ask that you might have some basic skills with woodworking hand tools as this will really help you to get along and make the most of the week.
